On January 23rd to 25th took place the first compatition of the Badwater World Cup. The BWWC is a series of three 135 mile races happening in different countries and completely different environments: Arrowhead 135, Canada Minnesota, a race in the snow; Badwater 135, California, a run in desert conditions and the first one on the calendar, Brazil 135. The race is on the Mantiqueira Mountains -a sub range of the Andes Cordillera- and takes participants up and down through the toughest race course in Brazil. Nothing less than about 33.000ft (10,000m) of elevation gain and approximately 29.000ft (9,000m) of elevation loss with only ten flat miles in the entire race awaits those who want to finish the event. And that must be done under the 60hours cut off. Read more » »

La Sportiva Crosslite vs. Fireblade vs. Wildcat
January 21, 2010 · Filed Under Shoes & Gear
I was approached a few months ago by La Sportiva to test a few of the models of their trail/mountain running shoes line-up. I have to say I haven’t felt such an excitement about new shoes in a long time. La Sportiva is one of the best trail running footwear manufacturers on the market, and I was looking forward slipping on three of their most renowned models: the Wildcat, the Fireblade and the Crosslite. I’ve been using them for a few hundred miles now, and here’s what I can say about them (spoiler alert: it’s not going to be the last time there will be new La Sportiva shoes in my closet…) Read more » »

Trail and Ultra Running Calendars
January 14, 2010 · Filed Under Trail World, Utilities
New year, new resolutions…. new racing agenda! Some of you might already started the year participating in some of the races that took place in this past 2 weeks, but many (including myself) might still be planning the racing season. So I thought I would put together a list of trail running and ultra running calendars that I’ve got bookmarked in hope of helping you, runners avid for competition.
Many of the calendars list exactly the same races so it’s more about which one has the best and easiest search interface for the type of races you are looking for. I tried to cover those that I think are most complete and searchable but there surely are other calendars worth noting here, so just let me know in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.

Moji Cold Compression Wraps
January 6, 2010 · Filed Under Health & Nutrition, Shoes & Gear
I’m introducing today a new colaborator of TRS. I’m sure many of you already know Devon Crosby-Helms‘ ultrarunning background, so I’ll just point out a couple of her winner performances of this past year: the Gore-Tex TransRockies Run and the JFK 50. She took the job of reviewing a couple of products provided by Moji, the icing products company. Keep reading her notes to learn from these products. Oh, and don’t miss Devon on her ultrarunning blog and fast foodie website!
Aches, pains, injuries. They are a part of running and training, for most. For the most part, knock on wood, I have not had any major injuries in my running career. Part of the reason that I think that is the case is because I get consistent bodywork and because I take ice baths. Lots and lots of ice baths. I have learned to love plunging myself into a freezing body after a hard workout or race and stay warm with the thought of all the benefit I am getting from the loathed activity. A lot of people cannot stand the thought of an ice bath or simply choose to not utilize the option. I can remember back to my college days when after practice (basketball) the trainers would give me the option to soak in the cold tub or have ice bags plastic wrapped around my lower back and knees (at the same time), I would 95% of the time take the latter option. I would waddle off all wrapped up and find a comfy spot on the dorm room floor to do my icing. The plastic bags/plastic wrap provided a combination of cold and compression that really addressed the inflammation in my knees and back and helped keep me playing and training. I always thought, as the bags leaked or the plastic wrapped folded up on itself as I tried to walk, “there has to be a better way!” and alas, there is finally! Read more » »
