Ironman World Champion Chris McCormack and three time XTERRA Hawaii winner Melanie McQuaid share some of their experiences and give advice to off-road triathlon athletes. On the interview they talk about nutrition, mental focusing and other topics applicable to any endurance sport, though the most surprising statement comes from McCormack:
“I had worked with all these scientists and nutritionists and they had designed this plan for the race. They told me no caffeine.
I ran the worst race of my life. I almost gave up on the run, till one of the other guys told me to grab a coke.
After that it was caffeine at every stop. Now for the last seven miles all I drink is Red Bull.”
Is he kidding or are we all missing something? On the article he explains his reasons for this final stretch caffeine shot.
