The book tells the true story of the endurance race coast-to-coast across America that took place in 1928. 199 runners came from all over the world attracted by the huge $25,000 prize for the winner, a especially significant amount for that time. Williams has recreated this long-forgotten sports event, mixing colorful anecdotes from the race with vivid portraits of the runners. From the review “This historical piece blends historic accounts with memoirs of the runners and their descendants and offers a glimpse at one of the original sports promoters and what the human spirit will endure when faced with desperation.”

C.C Pyle’s Amazing Foot Race is a great read – I didn’t want to put it down. On the other hand, the books format of chapters consisting of daily reports makes the book great bedtime reading. Highly recommended!
I just updated the post with another couple of reviews that recommend the book. Sounds like it’s going to be a good read for this summer weekends :)
