Organizing Trail Races: Hints for Race Directors

Outdoor endurance sports are increasingly becoming more and more popular. The Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc 2008 filled up in 5 minutes. The Marathon des Sables in 4 minutes and the entrants on the Western States 100 triples the available places. With that in mind, no wonder some people decide to start their own race! If you are one of these, this “Guide To Organize Trail Races” may be a good read to get help on how to set up a competition. The book ““ or rather a booklet as it’s 34 pages long ““ published by the UK Trail Running Association is from 2001, but things have not changed that much and the knowledge you’ll find in it doesn’t expire.

How to mark the route, how to write instructions so that racers don’t get frustrated, administrative tasks before and on the race day or risk assessment are some of the topics covered within the 115 items. Plus some useful information in the annexes and the last 2 pages dedicated to hints for competitors, to make both them and the race director’s life easier. Below the content of the main chapters listed:

  1. Introduction
  2. Definition of Trails
  3. First Steps
  4. Administration Before Race
  5. Methods of Showing Competitors the Course
  6. Marking the Route
  7. Writing Narrative Instructions
  8. Wainwright Directions
  9. Administration On Race Day
