Site News: New Category and Site Performance
April 22, 2008 · Filed Under Site News
You may have noticed last week a new category showed up on the top menu: Deals. I’ve been working on this new section for the last 10 days to get deals and coupons that relate to the site topics. I’m just monitoring different sites with good deals and filtering what I feel may be of interest. Behind the scenes it is still kind of beta (the post creation is semi-automated) but there are already around 20 items on the list. These items will not show up on the home page or will be included in the regular RSS feed. I don’t want anyone miss the real interesting news behind a ton of coupons (actually 2 or 3 a day but it will eventually increase) so if you’re interested just check out regularly that page or subscribe to the deals-only RSS feed.
On a side note, the site’s performance has been terrible for the past 10 days. A single page takes forever to load and this affects not only viewing but editing posts as well. As Yahoo (my current host provider) doesn’t seem to be up to fixing this soon, I’m paving the way for a second provider and eventually switch over if things don’t improve soon. In the meantime, thanks for the patience and keep checking out trailrunningSoul!

This is great! I just stopped by REI last night to purchase some running socks & nutrition at full price and thought to myself, that it would be nice to be able to find this stuff on sale online somewhere. $15 for a pair of socks? They have to be cheaper somewhere online.
It has been a bit slow the last little while, but just figured it was on my end. Hopefully all the kinks get worked out.
I’m enjoying the site.
Just a quick question, are you getting much traffic? It’s a great site, the word’s just got to get out. I’m passing it on to my friends in the sport.
Thanks!
Glad that you like this new feature. I’ve got many things in my head that I will slowly add to the site but the final word if something is useful and stays or not will always be in the site’s audience hands.
The site traffic is constantly increasing but not at the speed I’d like it to. Believe it or not, I’m spending 4-5 hours/day on the site and at some point either my boss or my wife will kick my ass :) My initial plan was to run the site until June/July and then see if this is going somewhere or not. I’m quite happy about it and I get lots of good feedback but it’s not easy to reach and engage the trail community (or any other for that matter). I still think this kind of site is something needed but we’ll see.
Thanks for spreading the word! I really appreciate it!
