Gobi March Began Yesterday

The Gobi March, part of the 4 Deserts, kicked off yesterday with 190 participants from 26 countries. Some interesting facts about the race:
- The majority of the area where the Gobi March will be held is closed to tourists, requiring special permits
- The course is expected to reach an altitude of about 3000 meters
- The youngest competitor is 19 years old (from the United States) and the oldest is 67 years old (from Japan), being the average 38.5
- The largest contingent of competitors is from the United Kingdom with 39 followed by the United States with 37
- 80 percent of the competitors are male and 20 percent female
Currently competitors have finished Stage 3, won in a photo finish by Ryan Sandes closely followed by Juan Encina of Chila and Lia Farley taking the win in the women’s division. One of the top competitors this year is ultrarunner Dean Karnazes, running the Gobi March as part of his Desert GrandSlam.
