“I’m thrilled to be able to compete in The Coastal Challenge,” says Jurek. “I’ve been following the event and its growing appeal for several years, and look forward to competing in Costa Rica both this year and in 2010 at the “Route of Fire” in the North, against some of the sport’s top athletes.”
Among his many accomplishments, Jurek is a seven-time champion of the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run; two-time champion of the Badwater Ultramarathon; defending twotime Spartathlon champion (in Greece); and winner of the Hardrock 100 Mile Endurance Run. Jurek will wear Brooks apparel at TCC, and Brooks will serve as an event sponsor and partner. More information can be found at www.scottjurek.com and www.brooks.com.
“Scott Jurek is a legend in the utltra running and trail running community, and we’re honored to have him at TCC,” says Tim Holmstrom, race director. “His participation is a testament to
the evolution of our event, which continues to add top competitors and course enhancements each year.”
The 2009 race, which has a limited number of entries still available, offers four categories of participation:
• Team Expedition Run – Runners sign up in teams of three to six
• Solo Expedition Run – The full 200+ kilometer Expedition Run
• Solo Adventure Run – A shortened, yet extremely challenging 125-kilometer route
• Guest Adventure Tours – Daily adventure tours like river rafting, nature hikes and more available to guests of the runners
The 2009 TCC course, coined “The Rainforest Edition,” is set along Costa Rica’s tropical Pacific coastline and weaves into the Talamancas, a coastal mountain range in the country’s Southwest corner. The event finishes in Corcovado National Park, one of the world’s premier rainforests and a Unesco World Heritage site. The course served as the inspiration for the revamped www.thecoastalchallenge.com, which includes enhanced photos and information. Also, in an effort to keep our competitors and running community better informed before, during and after the event, TCC has created a new competitor and race coverage site www.tccadventures.com.
