Parr and Clemons Take Leadville Trail 100

Leadville Trail 100Relatively unexpected winners this year at the 27th annual Leadville Trail 100 Mile. Although Tim Parr was on some of the predictions to win the event, he was not on top of the list, and neither was Lynette Clemons, the overall woman’s winner.

The race day broke with great starting weather and with a forced course re-route due to a black hawk chopper crash on Mt Massive. Unfortunately the live webcast was often down (a deja vu this year…) so the best way to follow runners was through twitter, were volonteers, pacers and expectators tweeted the progress of runners as they were posted on doors of courthouse in Leadville. Tony Krupicka, two time winner and favorite for the final victory together with defending champion Duncan Callahan, led strong for the first 70miles. But Krupicka, who trains through the summer months in Leadville and had just set the course record at the USATF 50 mile championship a few weeks back,  dropped out with cramping at mile 75.  With him out, things went down to Callahan and Parr, with the last taking the lead from defending champion on the climb up Sugarloaf at about 80 miles. And so Tim Parr, 27, from Gunnison, CO, finished his first 100 miler with a victory in 17:27. Nick Lewis, 23, Memphis, TN, took 2nd in 17:44, after passing Callahan at the Fish Hatchery aid station, who would finish 3rd in 18:26. Check out this post-race interview with Parr on denverpost.com.

On the woman’s race, Lynette Clemons, a Leadville resident took the lead at Hope Pass and won in 20:58,  nearly an hour away from Jamie Donalson, who held off Darcy Africa’s late rush and took second.

505 people started the trail run and 273 finished it.
