Records Fall at the Wasatch 100

Both Geoff Roes and Betsy Nye set new course records at the Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run this past weekend. The 30th edition of the Salt Lake City area 100-miler showed one of the most impressive performances this year in both men and women divisions.


Geoff, the days preceding the race, wrote on his blog he had done all that was in his hand to run well this race. And that seemed enough to run the fastest Wasatch 100 in history, with a time of 18:30:55, smashing the old record set by Kyle Skaggs in 2007 by more than an hour. Geoff also ran the final 25 miles, from Brighton to the finish, in just under 5 hours while holding off six-time winner Karl Meltzer for the win. “One thing I will say is that I don’t ever again want to spend 85 miles being chased by Karl. He was shockingly relentless in his pursuit “, Geoff said on his first quick thoughts after the race. In fact, Karl also broke the existing record by 23 minutes. The second placed wrote on his race report “Geoff Roes now has the “Performance of the Year” hands down.  18:30 on this course is sickly fast and one for the archives. ”

Likewise, the women’s race was one of the fastest and most competitive in history. Besty Nye and Mandy Hosford both finished under the Cheetah time of 24 hours with course records. Betsy pulled out the victory after leading most of the way until mile 83, when local resident Mandy caught her and took a 3 minute lead. But the runner from Tahoe City pulled away on the technical last descent and won in a time of 23:15:18. It was the first time in race history that two women finished in less than 24 hours.
