World Mountain Running Champion Fails Drug Test
Doping hits the sport of mountain running: this past September 6 Elisa Desco underwent a drug test right after his victory in the World Mountain Championship in Italy. This past week we learnt she didn’t past the test and that, confirmation pending, she might be stripped of her title and might be banned form official competitions. Regardless whether this case is ultimately confirmed or not, drug abuse will happen in mountain and ultra running sooner or later, as happened before in many other sports. Sad.

The Italian athletics federation said Thursday that Desco failed a doping test on Sept. 6, the day she won her world title in Campodolcino in northern Italy. The federation did not identify the drug.
The race was run at an altitude of 1,750 metres. Italians swept the podium, with Valentina Belotti placing second and Maria Grazia Roberti in third.
Desco’s invitation to the world half-marathon championships in Birmingham, England, on Sunday was immediately revoked.
Pending testing of a backup “B” sample, Desco could be stripped of her title and face a ban of up to two years.
