In his debut at the Mountain Masochist 50-mile trail run in Lynchburg, Va., Alaskan Geoff Roes continued his incredible performance in this 2009, adding one more reason to be the ultramarathon runner of the year. The race is one of the most famous 50-milers, covering a challenging terrain with over 9000 feet of elevation gain and a time limit of 12 hours for the 300 participants. But Geoff just needed 6 hours, 27 minutes, 55 seconds of those 12 hours to not only take his fifth victory in this season, but also to smash by more than 20 minutes Dave Mackey’s previous course record. This season, the Montrail athlete already won and broke the record at H.U.R.T. 100, Crow Pass Crossing, Wasatch 100 and Bear 100. As usual, he has his report for the MMTR on his blog.
The second place was for Lon Freeman, clocking 6:58:25 and third for Canadian Gary Robbins. Both runners posted times within the top ten fastest times in the race’s 27 year history. Gary also has a good write up of his race.
On the women’s side two British Columbia athletes beat their competition with Tamsin Ansey finishing first overall and Nicola Gilldersleeve. Their times were 8:09:07 and 8:39:53 respectively. Heather Fisher was third in 8:47:00. Pics of the race and Gilldersleeve’s report here.
Mountain Masochist was race #3 of the Montrail Ultra Cup. Check out the full results of this year’s MMTR, the photo gallery and videos on eco-x sports youtube channel.
