After 15 years on the trails he has now logged over 50,000 miles. That was the perfect excuse for the folks at Good4sports Blog to interview the ultra runner from Boulder, Colorado. Great insight on how he started keeping track of his runs, how he does it (mostly just estimations based on how long he runs and the terrain he goes over!) and many other goodies about his life as a runner. Check out the interview here.

Ultrarunner Dean Karnazes: they say he’s not human. Outer Edge wanted to find out so figured we’d meet him in the flesh. But to do that, it had to be on his terms. While running The North Face 100, one of Australia’s top notch ultra events in the Blue Mountains, NSW. Deputy Editor Chris Ord decided to catch him mid race (or try to catch him, at least). He expected a short stretch alongside Dean, giving a little insight into what makes the most famous ultra runner tick over millions of kilometres. What he copped was a 46km conversation. This interview was the morning after. There’s a reason Chris is sitting down…shall we say, a little gingerly. Research really should have included a little training, Chris.

Via Rockymountainsports.com* I got to a series of podcasts on the Ultramarathon Man. The audio shows featuring Karnazes date from back 2006 and were recorded by The Competitor Radio Show, the radio show founded by triathletes Bob Babbitt and Paul Huddle that has now gone on-line making publicly available all the recorded interviews with endurace athletes. Check out the each of the links below to listen to the interviews.

Dean Karnazes Audio Interviews

12/07/08 – How did you spend your summer and fall? Probably a tad differently than Ultrarunner Dean Karnazes, who ended up traveling all over the globe to run four or the toughest deserts. Listen to podcast

07/24/08 - Dean Karnazes came on to chat about the nationwide release of UltraMarathon Man, the film documenting his 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days. The film will launch in 200 theatres on Thursday July 31st and the website is www.50marathons.com. Listen to podcast

05/18/08 - Dean Karnazes is at it again. He is running from Sonoma to San Diego-700 miles total- by going from Mission to Mission. During our 30 minute chat, the guy ran over three miles! Listen to podcast

11/11/07 - Dean Karnazes is one of our favorite guests. Why? Because the guy is always creating new adventures. His next one is a 100 mile run from San Diego to Long Beach-about 100 miles-on Thursday November 15th, a 26 mile kayak with adventure racing studette Robyn Benincasa from Long Beach to Catalina Island on Friday the 16th and then the inaugural Catalina Eco-Marathon on Saturday the 17th. The guy is an endurance freak! Listen to podcast

04/08/07 - Dean Karnazes, who completed 50 marathons in 50 days in 50 states, came on to update us on his newest challenge. Here’s a hint. It has to do with running over 300 miles in Australia. Then on November 17th he’ll be joining us at the first ever Catalina Eco-Marathon with his good buddy David Goggins, but they wanted to make the marathon a bit of a challenge, so they’ll be KAYAKING about 26 miles from Long Beach to the start of the marathon and then running. Care to join him? Listen to podcast

12/12/06 - Is there a more amazing accomplishment than running 50 marathons in 50 days in 50 states? For Dean Karnazes, the Northface 50/50/50 was only a mere cocktail weenie compared to what he is doing right now. After finishing up the 50/50/50 gig in New York on November 5th-he was about one minute behind Lance Armstrong that day- the guy decided to RUN home to San Francisco and is averaging 50 miles a day. Bob and Paul caught up to Dean on Sunday night December 10th while he was in Indiana. Besides visiting schools along the way to inspire them with his story, after running the roads of America for the better part of three months, Karnazes is now the foremost authority on road kill. Listen to podcast.

* I’m not linking to RockyMountainSports as the site was acquired by the Competitor Group in late April and is now redirecting to competitor.com. None of the existing links are working on the new domain and can’t seem to find the articles anywhere on the new site. I have linked to some of their great articles before so it would be sad to have lost such a source of good information. Let’s see if it eventually comes back on-line.

This past month of April another edition of the Namibia 24hours Ultra was held in the northern Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world and the largest and most remote National Park in Africa. 126Km through endless gravel plains and mountains and under an unforgiving sun. All to be completed under 24 hours.

This year marked a feat in the event: Emma Rogan was the first female completing the race. 4th placed (with only 13 finishers out of 24 participants), the 32 year old woman from Oxford was interviewed by Sportsister, The Women’s Sports Magazine. The Comrades finisher goes through her training, motivation, how she managed to avoid overheating during the day and how she still has blisters on her heels. Interesting reading on what’s like to desert run.

And if this sounds like fun to you, registration for the 2010 race is already open.

LS: Congratulations on finishing the 2009 Umstead 100 mile Trail Race
KW: Thanks. It’s been a good week.

LS: Is it true that you set a new record for female masters runners in a 100 mile event?
KW: Yes. The previous record was 17:13, set by Connie Gardner in 2006.

LS: How was your training leading up to the big day?
KW: Training for Umstead was a bit atypical because we had a big 4 months last year with four 100 milers between July 19th and November 8th so I figured I would just carry it through the year after I signed up for Umstead in September. The first 100 was great, but we DNF’d on the second (three weeks later) with only about 18 miles to go. Keep reading…
